More About Nicholasville, Kentucky

lasville, in Jessamine County, Kentucky, began to be built as early as 1798 and was named in honor of George Nicholas, a U.S. Revolutionary War colonel known as the "Father of Kentucky's Constitution."

Today, downtown Nicholasville is a National Historic District, a designation given after a period of historic building preservation and aesthetic revival.

Nicholasville participates in the Bluegrass Area Development District Tourism Council, the Kentucky Heritage Council and the Historic U.S. 68/80 Commission. Also playing a significant role in local tourism is Nicholasville's participation in the Heritage Landmarks Corridor, encompassing sites and attractions from four Kentucky counties. Together these organizations promote historic and cultural attractions, events and walking and driving tours.

Nicholasville offers events, attractions and historical sites to satisfy a wide range of interests. Asbury College in Nicholasville offers scenic trails, bird-watching, horseback trail rides, and summer horse camps at its Equine Center. The Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park in Nicholasville was a Union Army Civil War supply depot and training camp, and currently offers a large trail system and educational opportunities for visitors. The Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame in also located in Nicholasville, highlighting great football players from Kentucky.

Nicholasville is also home to the world's largest lock collection at the Museum of Physical Security. On the nearby Kentucky River, tourists and locals alike enjoy rides on the Valley View Ferry, the oldest continuous business in Kentucky since 1785. High Bridge and High Bridge Park are also essential tourist destinations. High Bridge Park features the High Bridge railroad trestle which spans the Kentucky River, and was the highest in the world when it was built in 1877.
